The Castle Heights neighborhood is located off of New Walkertown Road and Carver School Road. The first homes in the neighborhood were built in 1958. Over one hundred homes were built by Greensboro developers, Cloister Homes Inc., and civil engineer J.E. Ellerbe.
The homes were available for $9,000 with low monthly payments and up to forty-year mortgage plans. As a result, they provided affordable housing for African-Americans who were displaced through the destruction of downtown neighborhoods in the early twentieth century.
The Castle Heights neighborhood’s resident leader is Kimberlee McNeil. Ms.McNeil grew up in Castle Heights and is passionate about her neighborhood and being a good neighbor. Indeed, Ms.McNeil is President of the Castle Heights Neighborhood Association and is extensively involved in community engagement and projects.
